Meet Teddy
Breed: Haflinger
Color: Flaxen Chestnut
Age: 17
Height: 13.3 hh
Fun Fact: Teddy loves to SMILE!
Teddy is our gentle, golden boy with a heart as big as his belly! Calm, patient, and kind, Teddy connects easily with people of all ages. He’s a Haflinger; a sturdy breed that originated in the Austrian mountains. Haflingers like Teddy were bred to carry packs and pull artillery through rugged terrain during World War I. Today, many still work as cart horses for the Amish in the northern United States, which is where Teddy began his life—as a hardworking carthorse.
Due to an injury that left him partially blind, Teddy was no longer suitable for cart work. As a result, he ended up in a kill pen. Thankfully, he was rescued and began a brand-new chapter as a therapy horse. Since then, he’s helped individuals with autism, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi syndrome, and Rett syndrome. With his steady gait and unshakable patience, Teddy is a favorite among our beginner riders and a trusted partner in our Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy sessions for at-risk youth.
When he’s not working, you’ll find Teddy relaxing with his pasture buddies, sneaking into the barn for snacks, or showing off his signature smile. He’s truly a one-of-a-kind horse with a heart to heal.
